This Aeta teacher finally passed the licensure examination after 25 tries.
Meet Gennie Panguelo, an Aeta teacher who became an inspiration to others that when it comes to pursuing your dreams, failures should not be a hindrance. Teacher Gennie is currently working at Tarukan Elementary School in Tarlac.
According to Rachfeed, after graduating with a degree in Education, she started working in the Department of Education as a teacher to her fellow Aetas. In the 1980s, the Department of Education was still lenient to professional licenses. DepEd wasn’t strict in accepting teachers even if they haven’t passed the Licensure Examination for Teachers (LET).
She began taking the LET in 1990 but repeatedly failed to pass. Around 2010, the Civil Service Commission (CSC) already began issuing warnings to those teachers without licenses. Teacher Gennie shared that she experienced discrimination and insult for repeatedly failing the LET.
“Sinasabi nila matanda ka na, ‘di ka pa pumapasa.” At that time, she had taken the LET 15 times already.
She was so blessed to be receiving a scholarship under the Carl Balita Review Center (CBRC). On her 25th try in March 2016 examination, she finally passed the Elementary LET.
“Sa mga kabataan na tulad kong naghangad na maging titulado, huwag po kayong manghinayang. Kapag bumagsak, bumangon ulit. Kasi hindi lang nakukuha sa isang pagkakataon, kailangan natin ng tunay sa loob, sinseridad, at pagtitiyaga,” she said.
She is now finishing her PhD in Teaching and Management after she finishes her Master’s Degree. She also went on to win Carl Balita’s Gawad Agila 2018 Award. Her life story was turned into a movie entitled, ‘Maestra’.
