Many of us probably heard or read a rag to riches story. But the story of this nanny, which I would consider as one of the inspiring stories of all time. This woman got surprised with the real identity of the nanny she hired which turned out a real princess. Meet Diana Spencer or popularly known as Princess Diana.
Even after her passing, Diana Spencer is remembered by various titles such as the Princess of Wales, The People’s Princess, and mother to Prince William and Prince Harry. She is a figure of elegance, humility, and kindness resonated with everyone.
But did you know that she actually worked as a nanny before she ascended into royalty? Before she became one of the most influential people in the 20th century, Diana Spencer or Princess Diana worked as a nanny when she was a teen, earning $5 per hour.
She was hired by an American businesswoman working in London named Mary Robertson in 1980. Robertson needed a little help in taking care of her younger son, Patrick. She contacted a local agency and sent her the 18-year-old Diana Spencer.
Diana Spencer is a quiet and shy type teenager back then and she worked three days a week for Robertson and was a nursery school teacher for the rest of the week. Robertson said she fell in love with her because she would do laundry, pick up toys, wash dishes, and she recounted, “she was wonderful with my child.”
Little did the American expat know that her part-time nanny was born into one of England’s noble families complete with a long line of royal ancestry. She only learned about it upon stumbling on a deposit slip from Diana’s bank under their couch. The deposit was directed to Coutts and Company.
After several years of experience, Robertson was aware that the bank exclusively caters to aristocrats and members of the royal family. She went on to confront Lady Diana about it in which the latter reacted like it was no big deal and simply asked to take Patrick out for a walk. Diana then went on to continue her nanny duties.
A few months later, she got another surprise when she found out that Diana was dating the future King of England. Robertson recalled how Diana once warned her about the reporters and photographers that would start showing up on her doorstep. Diana Spencer later submitted her notice of leaving Robertson. The next time she saw her former nanny is when she was walking down the aisle in the Royal wedding witnessed by the whole world.
Despite what happened, Diana Spencer kept in touch with Robertson after her wedding to Prince Charles. For a total of sixteen years, they spoke through dozens of cards and letters.
On August 31, 1997, Diana Spencer was involved in a car accident that cost her life. Among the mourners was Robertson who showed up at her funeral in London’s Westminster Abbey. Even up to this day, Robertson still remembered how extraordinary woman Diana Spencer is.
