Nowadays, it is normal to look for love on social media or dating sites. Since there are a lot of stories started from there, many people tried their luck to finally found their one true love. For the case of this particular guy, this Filipino seaman falls in love on Facebook, however, ended up losing a big amount of money because of it.
For some OFW, social media is a big help to ease their loneliness and fight homesick. They tend to look for friends, chatmates, even their perfect match. While some are lucky to find a serious one, some are also unfortunate to the point of loosing not just emotional investments but also money.
Just like in the case of this 23-year-old seafarer named Frederick Egea. This young man fell in love with a beautiful lady he met through Facebook. However, he learned a lesson the hard way after it resulted in so much loss after being deceived.
According to Rappler, Seaman Frederick Egea met Joana Mae Cruz on Facebook in June 2017 and immediately fell in love with the woman. During the course of their relationship, Egea has sent up to Php600,000 to Cruz who said she needed the money for her tuition fee and other personal needs.
When Egea finally returned to the Philippines on September 25, Cruz has a lot of excuses when he wanted to meet her. Later, Cruz admitted that the photo she was using is the 20-year old Angelica Calanog and identified her real identity as 21-year-old Angelica Miguel.
When Angelica Calanog was asked by her mother if where did the gifts came from, Miguel said she has a “cousin abroad working as a seaman attracted to her daughter.”
Little did Calanog knows, the Facebook profile using her photos was used to extort money from a seaman.
