A newlywed couple’s big day turned like a scene from a disaster movie after a rare tornado crashes a wedding ceremony in Marikina during the wake of supertyphoon Ompong.
With an international name Mangkhut, Super typhoon ‘Ompong’ is classified by PAGASA a cyclone with at least 220 kph top winds as a super typhoon, the same category as Yolanda, which pounded the Visayas in 2013. Ompong was earlier classified as a super typhoon by the US Joint Typhoon Warning Center (JTWC), based on 1-minute instrumental readings.
But despite the threat of typhoon Ompong, some people in Marikina have something to be celebrated and ‘commemorated’.
In a video clip uploaded by a Facebook netizen Von Eric Espina, features a wedding event in Marikina where people are seen celebrating the sacred event. Until their happy faces turned into panic when a tornado crashes the wedding ceremony.
The venue went black as it was followed by a black-out a few seconds later, which sent everyone in a flurry of panicked screams.
The video is currently making rounds on social media to warn people from the possible danger supertyphoon Ompong can cause, especially to those living in Marikina.
According to an ABS-CBN News report, a tornado with a 1-kilometer radius hit Marikina and affected about 20 houses in barangays San Roque and Santa Elena.
According to Marikina Mayor Marcy Teodoro, among those damaged by the tornado is the Marikina Cultural Center, an 800-square meter adobe structure, which saw the entire roof stripped off.
Authorities are now assessing the extent of damage on site.
Six to 8 more typhoons are expected to enter the Philippine area of responsibility before the year ends.
