Edible Water Pods Could Soon Eliminate Plastic Bottle Waste

Every year, there are around 50 billion plastic water bottles used and one billion of it, unfortunately, pollutes all bodies of water. These serious plastic problems caused so many tragedies and us humans deserved to blame. Thanks for the Skipping Rocks who created an edible water pod that could soon eliminate plastic bottle waste.

Factoring in a measly 23% recycling rate, the remaining 38 billion plastic bottles are dump somewhere in the landfill which is literally centuries to naturally decompose.

A London-based startup has created an innovational solution to the world’s plastic bottle addiction. Skipping Rocks Lab created edible water pods they call the “Ooho!” The thin, transparent edible water pods are made from a seaweed extract and are tasteless but can be made in any color or flavor.

It could be eaten whole after peeling the outer layer of the package. These edible water pods if fully biodegradable and could naturally decompose within 4-6 weeks if left unused, cheaper, and more environmentally friendly than plastic.

According to Elite Readers:

“Skipping Rocks Lab’s water bubble project began as the brainchild of a group of college students from the UK’s Royal College of Art and the Imperial College of London. They developed and introduced the edible water pods concept way back in 2013, but have been furiously crowdsourcing funds to finance the project and get it into the production phase ever since.”

The Skipping Rocks Lab already trialed their ingenious solution in London.

“Ooho is replacing sachets! Very pleased to be continuing our partnership with Just Eat UK trailing sauces in our seaweed based packaging. Our first 6 week trial with The Fat Pizza has now successfully concluded, and you can look out for us coming to a London takeaway later in the autumn…!”

On their website, the tagline says, “we make packaging disappear” and they meant it.

“We’re thrilled to team up with Lucozade Sport to use Ooho for their sports events. Bye bye plastic! 1st events: Richmond Marathon 16 Sept and Tough Mudder in West Sussex on 29 Sept. #passonplastic”

One bubble only creates 5x less CO2 than plastic bottles and requires 9x less energy. These edible water pods can be made for just two cents. They’re already well over their initial goal of £400,000 but are still accepting investment donations on Crowdcube.

Mother Nature will thank us for this.
